This is a paragraph with little content.

This is another small paragraph.

  • Trip introduction

This 5 day trek to Hampta Pass and Chandratal is one of the most fun treks in Himachal Pradesh. It is a moderate trek with some steep stretches, so is suitable for fit beginners. The route starts from the lush greenery of the Kullu Valley, and takes you through the pass into the arid Spiti Valley. You'll see the landscape changing with each day, and will enjoy the change from cool pine forests to rolling expanses of weather-bleached hills. The showstopper however, is the visit to the turquoise Chandratal Lake, where you'll find peace and beauty under the open skies.

    Destination

Hampta Pass lies at 14,100 feet, in the middle of the Pir Panjal range. It serves as a crossover from Manali to Spiti Valley, and is often used by nomad shepherds and locals from the region around. One day you'll be camping alongside a stream in the middle of green hills, and the next, you'll be scrambling over boulders in a dry, brown Spiti moonscape. That apart, you will experience the thick, mixed forests of Jobra, the undulating meadows of Chikha, and the heavenly sight of Chandratal Lake.

    Destination highlights

    • Trek through a stunning landscape that changes every day on the Hampta Pass and Chandratal trek.
    • Take on some fun river-crossings and walk along streams.
    • See the splendor of the Pir Panjal range around.
    • Marvel at the sight of Indrasan Peak and its massive glacier from Hampta Pass.
    • Stand in awed silence on the banks of Chandratal lake.
    • Camp in cosy tents and enjoy nights out in the wild.

  • Day 1 of the Hampta Pass trek: Drive from Manali to Jobra and trek to Chikha

You'll meet the operator at Manali bus stop in the morning, and will be driven to Jobra in a 2 hour drive. The trek to Hampta Pass starts from here. You'll head towards Chikha, just 2 hours away. This short trek along an easy slope gives you time to get warmed up and enjoy the views. You'll make your way through some spectacular landscapes and thick forests, with the Rani river on one side and a rocky hill on the other. Your campsite is set up in Chikha for the night, and you'll have the rest of the evening to read, explore the campsite, or just sit back and gaze at the mountains. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 2 of the Hampta Pass trek: Trek from Chikha to Balu Ka Ghera

After breakfast today, you set off to Balu Ka Ghera, which lies at an altitude of 11,900 feet. It will take you 5 hours to reach, and you'll start to see spectacular views of the magnificent Dhauladhar range and Indrasan Peak. It's river crossing day today, and you'll get to do one fun crossing at the start of the trek, and then one later in the day. You'll arrive at Balu ka Ghera by late afternoon, and can relax at camp. From your campsite, you can see the steep trail going up to the Hampta Pass, which you will attempt to cross the next day. Overnight at camp.

Day 3 of the Hampta Pass trek: Crossing Hampta Pass

Today is the day for Hampta Pass! You'll be getting to an altitude of 14,100 feet today, so eat a good breakfast and set off. It's a steep climb to the pass, and the winds pick up as you get there. From the pass, you'll get stunning views of the glacier on Indrasan Peak. You'll spend some time here, and then it's time to head over into the Spiti valley. As you descend from Hampta Pass to the campsite of Siagoru, you will witness the most incredible change of scenery. From lush greenery, you now enter the barren Spiti valley, with muted colours and small, hardy shrubs. You'll be staying in tents at Siagoru tonight.

Day 4 of the Hampta Pass trek: Chandratal Lake via Chhatru

You'll eat breakfast and set off down to Chatru today. This is the end of the Hampta Pass trek, but you've still got Chandratal left, and it's a great way to end. You'll board vehicles in Chatru and will be driven to Chandratal lake, which is about 50 kms away. The lake has deep blue water and is surrounded by the red and brown mountains of Lahaul-Spiti, making it absolutely stunning. You'll have some time to explore the lake. As it grows dark, you'll say goodbye to the lake and will return in vehicles to Chatru, where your campsite for the night is set up. The campsite has great views, and is a fitting end to your trek. Overnight in tents.

Day 5 of the Hampta Pass trek: Drive to Manali via Rohtang Pass

After a hearty breakfast, you'll board vehicles from Chatru to take you back to Manali. The drive takes about 3-5 hours, but there might be delays if the road is in bad condition.
