    Sign up for an action-packed road trip across the Spiti Valley and spend 8 days taking in imposing views of barren mountains and snow-capped peaks. Apart from gorgeous views of this cold desert valley, you'll experience the Indo-Tibetan culture at historic monasteries at Dhankar, Tabo and Key, where the walls are decorated with intricate paintings and the architecture displays the traditional Buddhist design. You'll stay in the quaint villages of Kalpa, Langza, Lhalung and Tabo, where home-stays offer a personal insight in daily life.

    The land of high mountains and deep valleys, Spiti is most well-known for its awe-inspiring beauty, friendly local natives and the unique blend of Indo-Tibetan and Buddhist cultures. This is the most evident at the monasteries of Spiti Valley, some of which date back more than 1,000 years. They are often set to incredible backdrops of mountain beauty, with rolling hills painted in differing shades of brown and grey. This road trip takes you to such monasteries and other interesting destinations such as the highest post office in the world at Hikkim and the fossil village of India at Langza.

    Rules on the trip

    Travellers are required to adhere to the instructions of the tour guide during the road trip to Spiti Valley.

    Travellers are requested to treat the local culture with respect and avoid littering, defacing property and monuments and causing general disturbance.

    Consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited during the road trip to Spiti Valley.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 30 days or more before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 90% refund.

    For cancellations made between 15-29 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 75% refund.

    For cancellations made between 10-14 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: 50% refund.

    For cancellations made less than 10 days before departure of the Spiti Valley road trip: no refund.

    In case of no show: no refund.

    All refunds will be processed after deducting a transaction fee of INR 200 per person. This fee is charged by The Great Next.

    Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

    Temperatures can get quite chilly during your road trip to Spiti Valley and travellers are recommended to carry proper winter apparel such as sweaters and thermal wear. Most home-stays will have a traditional or electric heater in the rooms.

    During this road trip to Spiti Valley, travellers will visit destinations at altitudes from 9,000 ft to 14,500 ft and may experience altitude sickness.

    Spiti Valley is located at an altitude with no internet connectivity and moderate road access/availability of services. Travellers are advised to take such circumstances under consideration before booking the trip.

    The tour operator takes utmost care to ensure safety of the travellers and shall not be held responsible for any mishap or accident during the trip.

    The tour operator reserves the right to change or cancel the itinerary of this trip due to bad weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances to ensure maximum safety of travellers and staff.

  • Day 1 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Shimla to Sangla

    Your road trip begins from the Shimla bus stand, as you board a private vehicle and set off on the curving roads towards Sangla. The drive takes you past scenic views of the forest, passing small towns like Kufri and Narkanda. The Indo-Tibetan highway goes alongside the Sutlej River and the dam reservoir at the confluence where the Baspa and Sutlej rivers meet. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse at Sangla.

    Day 2 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Day trip to Chitkul

    Today, you'll visit the small village of Chitkul, the last village before the Indo-Tibetan national border. In the village, you'll take short walks to explore and visit the local temple and the camp of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. From Chitkul, you'll drive back to Sangla. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse at Sangla.

    Day 3 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Sangla to Tabo

    On today's drive from Kalpa, you'll cross over several small, hillside villages in the valley and reach Tabo. Here, you'll visit the local monastery, which is more than a 1,000 years old. Spend some time admiring the ornate artwork decorating the walls or hike up to visit the caves of Tabo where monks used to meditate. Overnight in a home-stay at Tabo.

    Day 4 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar, Lhalung

    From Tabo, you'll continue your journey on the valley's winding roads to Dhankar. Here, you'll visit the local monastery, an architectural marvel that used to be a Mongolian prison and once the capital of Spiti Valley. A short hike from the monastery also takes you to the Dhankar Lake where you can relax and click scenic photos. From Dhankar, you'll proceed further to Lhalung, where snow-capped peaks and terraced farms offer great views, and end the day at Kaza, the largest city in the valley. Overnight in a home-stay at Kaza.

    Day 5 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Day trip to Key and Kibber

    On a day trip from Kaza, you'll visit the the Key Gompa, the most important Buddhist house of worship in the valley with gorgeous views of the Spiti River. Spend some time at the hill-top monastery and proceed further to visit Kibber, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. You'll travel back to Kaza by late evening. Overnight in a home-stay at Kaza.

    Day 6 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Kaza to Langza via Hikkim, Komic

    Gaining altitude, you'll drive higher in the mountains to visit two of the most interesting destinations in the valley. Your first stop is the village of Hikkim, where you'll visit the highest post office in the world at over 14,500 feet. The next stop is the village of Komic, one of the highest villages in the world with a motorable road. You'll visit the local monastery, the Tangyund Gompa, and drive to Langza, also known as the fossil village of India. Overnight in a home-stay at Langza.

    Day 7 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Langza to Kalpa via Nako

    After a lazy morning spent at Langza, you'll begin the return journey and drive back to Kalpa. You'll make a brief halt at the village of Nako to visit the artificial lake in the village that is surrounded by blooming pink flowers in late spring. Reach Kalpa, a little village with absolutely magnificent views of the snow-laden Kinner Kailash range. Overnight in a hotel at Kalpa.

    Day 8 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Kalpa to Shimla

    Today, you'll end your Spiti Valley road trip by driving back to Shimla. The 7-hr drive will take you back to the hill-station by late afternoon. Your Spiti Valley road trip ends here.

Today's meal plan includes dinner only, so make sure to have breakfast before arriving at the pick-up point. You can stop to have lunch at any restaurant or eatery en route to Sangla.

    Day 2 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Day trip to Chitkul

    Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse at Sangla.

    Take a day trip to visit Chitkul. You'll be accommodated in the same hotel or guesthouse at Sangla as yesterday. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only. Every day, you'll stop at any of the restaurants and eateries en route to your destination to have lunch at your own expense.

    Day 3 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Sangla to Tabo

    Overnight in a home-stay at Tabo.

    Travel from Sangla to Tabo. You'll be accommodated in a home-stay at Tabo. Please note that most home-stays will have common washrooms only. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only.

    Day 4 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar, Lhalung

    Overnight in a home-stay at Kaza.

    Travel from Tabo to Kaza. En route, you'll stop to visit Dhankar and Lhalung. You'll be accompanied by an experienced driver who will also act as your tour guide. You'll be accommodated in a home-stay at Kaza. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only.

    Day 5 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Day trip to Key and Kibber

    Overnight in a home-stay at Kaza.

    Take a day trip to visit Key and Kibber. As the largest city in the Spiti Valley, Kaza is the only town where you'll fin access to basic services like a bank ATM, medical services and cellular coverage. You'll be accommodated in the same home-stay at Kaza as yesterday. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only.

    Day 6 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Kaza to Langza via Hikkim, Komic

    Overnight in a home-stay at Langza.

    Travel from Kaza to Langza. En route, you'll stop to visit Hikkim and Komic. You'll be accommodated in a home-stay at Langza. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only. Please expect vegetarian food at most home-stays and restaurants since non-vegetarian food may not always be available everywhere.

    Day 7 of the Spiti Valley road trip: Langza to Kalpa via Nako

    Overnight in a hotel at Kalpa.

    Travel from Langza to Kalpa. En route, you'll stop to visit Nako. Please note that entry tickets to local attractions, such as monuments and monasteries, are payable on the spot. You'll be accommodated in a hotel at Kalpa. Today's meal plan includes breakfast and dinner only.
