    Fresh mountain air. Snowy trails. Wide open spaces. 360 degree views extending from the Tibet border, encompassing the entire Garhwali Himalayan range. Sounds like heaven right? Go on the Kuari Pass Trek in winter, and that’s exactly where you feel like you’re going!

    Being one of the few trekking destinations that are open in the winter, this is a popular end-of-the-year trek. But it’s also the spectacular views that make this so famous. As trekkers walk through lush fields, forests and remote villages, they are rewarded with enchanting views all around of the Chaukhamba Range to one side while the summits of Mana, Kamet and Abl Gamin extend on the other side all the way to the Tibet border.

    Destination

    This winter trek to Kuari Pass traverses through green meadows, dense forests, remote villages, gushing rivers and snow-capped mountains to give trekkers a trip of a lifetime.

    Located in Chamoli district, Kuari, which means 'doorway' in the local language, lies south of the Tibet border and on the western edge of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. It is surrounded on all sides by imposing ranges that include the Kamet, which extends up to a dizzying height of 7756 metres as well as the snowcapped ranges extending all the way to Gangotri.

    Rules on the trip

    Participants must adhere to the instructions of the team leader during the winter trek to Kuari Pass.

    Smoking, consumption of alcohol, narcotic drugs etc. is strictly prohibited on the Kuari Pass trek.

    Cancellation policy

    For cancellations made 24 days or more before departure of the winter trek to Kuari Pass: 95% of trek cost will be refunded.

    For cancellations made between 14-24 days before departure of the winter trek to Kuari Pass: 70% of trek/tour cost will be refunded.

    For cancellations made between 8-14 days before departure of the winter trek to Kuari Pass: 50% of trek/tour cost will be refunded.

    For cancellations made less than 7 days before departure of the winter trek to Kuari Pass: No refund.

    No show: No refund.

    All refund amounts will be processed after deducting any transaction charges.

    Additional instructions, booking policies, terms and conditions

    The operator reserves the right to change the itinerary of the Kuari Pass trek depending upon the weather conditions and other factors. If extra cost is incurred due to rescheduling, it will be borne by the trekker.

    Please note that sometimes an unforeseen event may force changes in the itinerary of the winter trek to Kuari Pass. In such cases, your trek leader will suggest the best alternative similar to your original itinerary.

    All the arrangements for the Kuari Pass trek are pre-planned and prepaid. In case of non completion of the Kuari Pass trek due to any reason whatsoever there will not be any refund for any unutilized services. Any extra expense due any alteration has to be paid extra.

  • Day 1 of the Kuari Pass trek: Haridwar to Joshimath

    You will be driven from Haridwar to Joshimath today. The drive takes about 10 hours, so you'll leave early in the morning. At Joshimath, you'll check into a guesthouse to get a good night's sleep.

    Day 2 of the Kuari Pass trek: Joshimath to Chitrakanha

    After indulging in a hearty breakfast, this is the day you will begin the actual winter trek to Kuari Pass. Trekkers first drive up to Dhak village and from here the adventure begins. You will trek up 3 kms through a hemlock, oak and rhododendron forest after which a short descent takes you to the Gulling campsite at Chitra Kanha which is located in a meadow. | The campsite is serene and offers breathtaking views of the Chaukhamba Range cloaked in white snow, extending to 23,500 feet. For the rest of the day you can explore the campsite and replenish your water supply from a small spring located at the head of the meadow. After dinner, it’s lights out. Overnight stay in tents.

    Day 3 of the Kuari Pass trek: Chitrakanha to Tali Top

    To prepare for today’s trek, you will start the day with a few stretching exercises in the open. After working up an appetite, you can dive into to the breakfast as your trek leader briefs you about what’s in store for today. Then you will begin your 6 kms trek to Tali Top – your campsite for tonight. The trail passes through a forested ridge of rhododendron, spruce and silver birch. | At Tapovan, the trek gets easier as you follow a well-defined track and take in the lush surroundings. It takes one hour to reach the ridge and an additional 30 minutes to reach Tapovan. Another night, another alpine meadow for you to camp in as you reach Tali Top and rest those tired muscles. Overnight stay in tents.

    Day 4 of the Kuari Pass trek: Tali Top to Kuari Pass

    Today is the day you get to visit what you came for. A long day of trekking awaits – the longest so far – so you will start earlier than usual. The first part of the trek takes you on a gradual ascend till a place called Khullara Top. From here experience the beauty of the Himalayan winter as you trek through a snow patch to reach Kuari Top. At Kuari Top, experience gushing winds and savour the unending vistas of the Himalayan peaks. The most famous of these is Nanda Devi which stands at an imposing 25,600 feet, making it India’s highest peak. Nanda Devi is surrounded by a circle of mountains with the Rishi Ganga forging its way through a deep gorge on its way to meet the Alaknanda river.     Day 5 of the Kuari Pass trek: Tali Top to Joshimath

    Make the most of your last day in the mountains. After breakfast you will trek downhill alongside the Rishi Ganga river gushing past. On reaching a point, a taxi will take you to Joshimath. Overnight stay in guest house.

    Day 6 of the Kuari Pass trek: Joshimath to Haridwar

    Today you will drive back to Haridwar and relive all the highlights of your trip on the way back. Trip ends here. If time permits, you should try to witness the Ganga Aarti at Har-ki-Pauri, providing a perfect end to the trip.
